Strawberry Shortcake Trifles

These gorgeous strawberry trifles include layers of butter cake, whipped cream and fresh strawberry sauce. You can make them ahead of time, and it is my all time favorite dessert to make when I have leftover cake pieces.

In the trifle I make in my video, I add a layer of pastry cream to the middle, since I had some leftover in my fridge. My recipe for vanilla bean pastry cream is right here, and to make these trifles you will need to make the entire recipe.

Strawberry Shortcake Trifles

Ingredients

Condensed Milk Whipped Cream

Ingredient Volume Grams Ounces
  heavy whipping cream, cold from fridge 1 cup - -
  condensed milk, cold from fridge 1/2 cup
  1. Pour both the whipped cream and condensed milk into the bowl of a stand mixer.
  2. Mix on high speed until you reach medium peaks. You want it to be a little smoother in texture for the finished trifles.

Fresh Strawberry Sauce

Ingredient Volume Grams Ounces
  fresh strawberries 1 lb - -
  granulated sugar 3-4 TB - -
  1. Cut 6-8 strawberries in half, with tops on. Set aside for decoration. With the remaining strawberries, cut into 1/2 pieces. Place in medium mixing bowl.
  2. Add 3 TB of sugar and taste. If your strawberries are on the sour side, add the additional tablespoon of sugar. Stir to mix and let sit for about half an hour, stirring every 10 minutes to allow the juices marinate.

Trifle Assembly

Ingredient Volume Grams Ounces
  vanilla cake cubes (leftover cake, Costco pound cake, freshly made - whatever you have) about 6 cups, or the equivalent of about 6-7 cupcakes - -
  fresh strawberry sauce, above - - -
  condensed milk whipped cream, above - - -
  1. To a large trifle bowl or small glasses, add a layer of condensed milk whipped cream.
  2. Add a layer of cake cubes, then spoon some strawberry sauce on top.
  3. Add another layer of condensed milk whipped cream (or pastry cream)
  4. Add one more layer of cake cubes, then strawberry sauce.
  5. Top with a large dollop of the whipped cream and garnish with a strawberry half.
  6. You can eat these immediately, or cover in plastic wrap to up to 24 hours before serving.
